Herb Roe was born in 1974 in Portsmouth, Ohio and spent his childhood across the Ohio River in Greenup County, Kentucky and later moved to Portsmouth while in his teens. He later received a scholarship to the Columbus College of Art and Design however; it wasn’t until the summer of 1993 he began working with a local muralist and learned his amazing new skill.
Herb Roe is a professional muralist and freelance artist living in Lafayette. After a 15-year career as a muralist, in 2007 Roe struck off on his own to do freelance fine art and mural work. He works in a variety of medians from oils, graphite, pen drawings to digital media. His subjects range from classical portraiture, classical realism, photo realist abstract compositions, historical illustration and product design.
Herb’s current artwork focuses on the traditional southwestern Louisiana Cajun celebration of the Courir de Mardi Gras and is a series of hyper-realistic documentary style depictions of costumed celebrants playing music, dancing on the backs of horses and chasing after chickens, called Courir de Mardi Gras in Louisiana.
Herb Roe paints South Louisiana like no one else could. His depictions of the Courir de Mardi Gras are so life-like that the tassels and fringed cloth dance on the canvas
